Due to deals with major labels, Spotify (of which I wrote earlier) had to restrict access to some of the music in their service. Spotify has been the first program to replace iTunes completely on my daily use. Listening to new music has never been easier – and it seems that labels tend to think it’s way too easy.
From Spotify blog:
“These restrictions are a legacy from when most music was sold on tapes and CDs and they have continued over into streaming music, our hope is that one day restrictions like this will disappear for good.”
Having just moved to Helsinki from NYC, I’ve only recently become aware of these ridiculous licensing issues – I can no longer buy tracks from my favorite techno shops (Other Music, Halcyon) due to this outdated foolishness. What is the justification for applying the same legal process to a physical product as to data?
I’m relying on Beatport for the time being, which is no good. Definitely going to check out Spotify…
