This must be the coolest idea in ages for sharing your mixes. Very retro. Click the image for more information.

As I mentioned earlier, I said byebye to my Fuji E550 and bought Fuji F31fd.

Now, after some weeks of use, I can tell it's a really good camera, no matter if you're a novice or an expert. Anyway, there are some things which I'd like to change:

- Adjusting BOTH Shutter Speed and Aperture at the same time. F31fd gives a possibility to adjust only one at a time.
- Maximum exposure time is 15sec. However, you can choose only 3sec exposure on S(hutter speed)-mode. To go to full 15sec, you have to choose "Night Shot"-mode. Why?
- Face Detection does not detect faces behind sun glasses or normal glasses. I don't mind, I wouldn't use the feature anyway.

However,

- ISO3200 has surprisingly small amount of noise. The amount of noise can be compared to E550's ISO800. Automatic ISO also works pretty well.
- Fast deleting of images, cropping, rotating etc are nice features. Not necessary, but useful anyway.
- The response is very fast.
- Returning back from picture viewer to shooting mode happens by pressing the shutter button down. Quick and efficient.

All in all - getting used to the way the camera works took a bit longer than with E550, but after shooting some photos in different circumstances, adjusting seems to be much faster than in E550.
There are plenty of features which I find useless, but for people who search for a camera with lots of automatic functions, they make sense. The image quality, colours and LCD display are very good and a price of 190e is therefore the best price-quality ratio on compact cameras I could find.

Got an English copy of Frank Schätzing's The Swarm. The best book in ages, highly entertaining and recommended.

I've been very satisfied with my current Fuji E550 camera. Despite the small size, the image quality has been remarkable (see: The Most Popular Photos, on Flickr). Also the sound quality on videos shot at clubs or in very loud circumstances has been fantastic. No matter how close to the sound source the camera is, there is no distorted sound on the video. Check some YouTube videos shot with E550.
Anyway, after some years of heavy use, my E550 is soon breaking to pieces. Pixmania provided a nice offer of Fuji model FUJI F31fd, which has gotten pretty good reviews. So, bought a new camera and looking forward to give it a test drive...


Time in Germany is running out and I'm heading to Nizza (or Nice, whatever) tomorrow morning. After five days there, I'm still taking a trip through Germany to Essen. Keith Jarrett is performing there on Monday, the 16th of July.

No Torture Here beta website is now up and running.

The idea is simple: Your task is to declare a location to be torture free. At first you download and print the “No Torture Here” flag. Then you go to some location, plant your flag and take a picture or video of the event. Back in your computer you upload your picture and video to flickr, youtube (or where ever), come back to the No torture here site and locate your flag to the Google map in the site.

It's funny how some people still think that everything that can be downloaded from internet can also be re-used for their own purposes. The photo has been protected with Creative Commons license, which (in this case) means that the photo can be copied, distributed and transmitted, BUT only with the permission of the author.

I love giving my works forward for non-commercial projects for free. It's always good if they spread around - and not rotten on my Flickr account - and people make the most out of them. But I definitely want to know when that happens. And I want to see clear links to my website and see the works used in a proper manner.

Well, of course this isn't anything like Rebecca's case, but it still sure pisses me off.

During my days in lovely Escanda, I met Becky. Becky is a violinist, who has toured all over the globe with and without the violin and with and without rock bands and other artists. Truly lovely and wonderful person.

Suomen tilanne on suhteellisen hyvä. Olemme syrjässä pahimmilta myrskyiltä ja sateilta. Sateiden lisääntyminen ei ole ongelma, jos ne pysyvät jossakin kohtuudessa. Kuivuuskaan ei pahemmin haittaisi, kun meillä riittää kasteluvettä. Ilmaston lämpeneminen pikemminkin parantaa kuin heikentää Suomen maatalouden kilpailukykyä.

I ordered my FON 3.12.2006. It arrived yesterday (17.1.2007). That's a bit more than two weeks they promised...

Also, my latest order from Hard To Find Records took one month until they mailed me yesterday. The package had come back to them. I had asked to deliver the package to the address of my friend, but now it seems, though, they had delivered the package to his address but with my name written on it. Of course it was returned to sender.

They have a "GIVE EXTRA INFORMATION HERE" box on their online order form, but do they really read what you write there...?
Surely they'll be asking me to pay the delivery costs double now. Surely I won't.

To start the double-o-seven properly, I guess it's time to sum up some of the moments of the past year.

Left Rovaniemi behind and moved to Helsinki. Getting a possibility of being part of Misc Management and working with some of the nicest guys in the southern electronic music scene has been more than delightful. The future looks exciting.

Got a possibility to travel a lot. Loved the Birkweiler wine fields. Saw Belfast, both sides of it.

Graduated. Wrote the Pro Gradu about Flyers in Electronic Music Culture.

After waiting for 11 years, finally saw Underworld live. Also enjoyed the Unity 10th Anniversary, both being the highlights of this year.

Finished remix of EBTG's "Missing" and a remake of Innerself's "Gautama", released seven DJ-mixes and a couple of radio sets. Buried Worldwide Mix Selection podcast project and concentrated on DJ Orion's podcast with a plenty of hi-quality guest mixes from Finnish artists.

Disliked Teosto and Gramex. Enjoyed some very good movies. Got sentimental while moving away from the north and couldn't help looking back.

Experienced some very nice gigs such as Spinni in Tampere, Choon! in Turku, Rio88600 in Sotkamo and Sunburn in Kalajoki to mention just a few. Got new friends and got together with the old - humble, simple and honest people, who I - once again - just can't give enough credit.

Made a new year resolution last year not to involve in any event production or promotion in spring 2006 - and got hands on way too many projects. Expecting the same to happen this year again.

The same in Finnish.

A couple of days ago I finally managed to finish a project which had been on a to-do stage for some weeks already: a photobooth usable for clubbing or event purposes.

Sain valmiiksi muutamia päiviä sitten jo useamman viikon työn alla olleen projektin: klubi- ja tapahtumakäyttöön soveltuvan valokuva-automaatin.

Idea on yksinkertainen: 2-3 henkilöä asettuu valokuvakoppiin seisomaan rinnakkain. Oikealla seinustalla on nappi, jota yksi kuvattavista painaa. Parin sekunnin jälkeen etuseinällä oleva kamera ottaa kuvan, joka heijastuu kuvattujen nähtäväksi seinälle asennetulle pienelle screenille.

Tämän jälkeen kuva lähetetään automaattisesti nettiin, Flickr-kuvapalveluun. Flickriä apuna käyttäen automaatin viimeisimmät kuvat voidaan lähettää reaaliajassa slideshowna klubin screenille tai pyörittää samaan tapaan klubin nettisivuilla.

Miksi tällainen projekti? Automaatin käyttäminen on halvempaa kuin ammattivalokuvaajan ja vaikkeivat kuvat ammattitasoon takuulla ylläkään, on tunnelma kopissa kavereiden kanssa takuulla rennompi kuin valokuvaajan tähtäillessä kuvattavien edessä.

Lisäksi kuvat saadaan jakoon välittömästi, mikä mahdollistaa niiden hyväksikäytön samassa klubi-illassa tai tarjoamisen niille, jotka eivät tapahtumaan päässeet, mutta ovat kotona verkkoyhteyden päässä. Lisäksi automaatin takaseinään mahdollisesti laitettu klubin logo löytyy parin illan jälkeen kymmenistä tai jopa sadoista kuvista useiden ihmisten tietokoneilta, mikä tuskin on omiaan ainakaan heikentämään klubin brändiä.

Miten tämä sitten toimii? Yhdistelemällä hieman scriptiä ja ohjelmia sain tietokoneen tottelemaan kauko-ohjausta niin, että infrapuna-kaukosäädin käskee yhdellä painalluksella tietokoneeseen yhdistettyä kameraa ottamaan kuvan, lisää kuvaan automaattisesti tarvittavat tagit ja uploadaa kuvan Flickr-palveluun. Koko automaatin toimintaan saattamiseen tarvitaan ainoastaan kamera, riittävän uusi tietokone, pieni feedback-monitori (ei pakollinen) ja verkkoyhteys, joka voidaan toteuttaa myös riittävän uudella kännykällä.

Valokuva-automaatti on näillä näkymin kokeiltavissa Kuudennella Linjalla tulevan kevään aikana (asiasta tarkemmin myöhemmin). Myös muut yhteistyöehdotukset tämän taholta ovat tervetulleita.

Dandelife finally made possible to create private timelines. It's been a great service, but the lack of this feature has kept me from registering. Now I'm a happy user, writing down my lifeline - privately.

365 is an interesting project really worth starting. Basically it's about taking one photo per day and creating an album which has 365 photos. Beyond that, it's a lot more. Let's see how far I'll get.

Seti@Home was a big thing some years ago. Now a small program called Boinc connects Seti@Home to other similar projects such as Einstein, Rosetta and climateprediction.net. Nice program to use your computer's idle time in a good way.

Kosmo had a good point while commenting the previous post, but how can you enjoy networking in a place where every third click brings you an "unexpected error"?

Testing Macbook's iSight: 1,5 hours of Carcassonne in two minutes.

Nyt ensimmäisen 24h kuluttua koneen saamisesta on jo jotain raportoitavaa. Kaikki ei sujunut aivan niin helposti kuin Mac-brändi antaisi ymmärtää, mutta tähän asti kaikki on kuitenkin lopulta saatu pelaamaan halutulla tavalla.

Asioita, joihin huomio on kiinnittynyt käytettävyyden kannalta, on kaksi: Trackpadin napin painallus on hyvin epähiirimäinen. Napista ei kuulu minkäänlaista klikkiä painettaessa ja pehmeys aiheuttaa välillä "no hyväksyikö se tuon?"-reaktion. Outoa tunnetta kuvaa hyvin, että luulin napin olevan rikki kun painoin sitä ensimmäisen kerran.
Toinen selkeästi nihkeä juttu on MightyMousen lyhyt johto. Vasenkätisille johto on varmasti riittävä, mutta oikeakätiset joutuvat pyöräyttämään sen kannettavan toiselle puolelle. Tällöin hiirimatto joutuu todella olemaan aivan kiinni koneen kyljessä.

Filesharing PC:n ja Macin välillä ei ole mikään maailman miellyttävin asennettava, ainakaan jos verkon keskustelupalstoja on uskominen. Sain viime yönä kolmen tunnin tahkoamisen jälkeen yhteyden toimimaan Maciltä PClle, mutta en toiseen suuntaan. Tänä aamuna pienen pähkäilyn jälkeen homma alkoi toimimaan Microsoftin(!) Remote Desktopin avulla.

Toinen käsittämättömyys tuli vastaan synkatessa Nokian 6600-puhelinta Macin kanssa. Kone lähetti puhelimeen ohjelman (SyncAgentin), joka ei suostunut asentumaan sitten millään. Pitkällisen turhan googlettelun jälkeen varmuuskopioin puhelimen muistin muistikortille, poistin muistikortin ja asensin ohjelman ongelmitta.

Sitten ohjelma-asennuksiin. Asentaessani Creative Suitea koneelle, tämä tietysti meni ja kaatui. Kieltämättä hämmentävää. Keskenjäänyt asennus jätti kasan filejä eri puolille konetta ja uudelleenasennusta ei pystynyt aloittamaan ennen niitä poistoa. Erityistä päänvaivaa aiheutti VersionCue, jonka pikkutiedostojen metsästäminen vei harmittavan pitkään. Jos ei muuta, tulipahan opittua minne ohjelmien eri osat putoilevat niitä asennettaessa OSX:ssä.

No, kadunko hankintaa tämän työntäyteisen ensimmäisen vuorokauden jälkeen? En hetkeäkään :)

Vielä pari kysymystä Mac-käyttäjille:
1) Onko olemassa jokin ohjelma, jolla pystyy lataamaan Nokian puhelimesta tekstiviestit koneelle?
2) Jos MSNää käyttää iChatin kautta Jabberia hyväksikäyttäen, voiko omaa nickkiä vaihtaa jollakin tavoin?

Orion's new mix Dead End is online and downloadable. When choosing the tracks for Dead End, the idea was to re-create the sound and the feeling which I had playing the opening set in Doris last October. That night I somehow ended up leaving all the records home which represent my usual style and chose only records which I've never played live. The result was astonishing - people went crazy with 120bpm weird techno, electro and acid tracks, which I never thought to be that good. Here's the remake of that night's set, enjoy (if you can) :)

I can hardly wait to get back to Germany and to the wonderful Alps...

...but while waiting I'm dreaming of Asian Girls.

In order to introduce some talents from Northern Finland, I chose DJ Gateway from Oulu as the first guest of the podcast.

DJ Gateway has compiled a very nice mix of latest progressive and trance tracks. Even though I'm not so much into vocal trance, I have to admit that these tracks weren't cheesy despite the female vocals. Quality stuff :) You can spot DJ Gateway spinning in the biggest clubs and events in Northern Finland, especially in Oulu and Rovaniemi.

Olen odotellut innolla uusien iBookkien tuloa markkinoille ja toivonut huhujen pitävän paikkansa tammikuun julkaisun suhteen. Toivon todella, että Applen siirtyminen yhteistyöhön Intelin kanssa pudottaisi kannettavien hintaa, kuten aiemmin huhuttiin ja että hinnanpudotuksesta huolimatta mallit pysyisivät vähintäänkin yhtä tehokkaina.

Tarvitsen kannettavaksi tehokkaan ja vakaan työkoneen, jolla hoituu perusnettikäytön lisäksi myös tarvittavat musiikkipuuhat. iBook tarjoaa käytännössä tämän kaiken, mutta pienet puutteet niin ulkokuoressa kuin käytettävyydessäkin hämäävät. Pari esimerkkiä:
- iBookissa ei ole line-in -liitäntää. Sitä varten tarvitsisi erikseen iMicin, jonka edellisen version toimivuudesta minulla ei ole erityisen hyviä kokemuksia.
- iBookin käyttö pelkällä näppäimistöllä ei ole erityisen helppoa. Olen PCn myötä tottunut käyttämään hiirtä mahdollisimman vähän, joten iBookin trackpadiin tarttuminen normaalia useammin turhauttaa. Esimerkiksi Firefoxin kysyessä "Tallennetaanko salasana", vaihtoehto "Ei" on oletuksena korostettuna. Windowsissa siirtyminen "Kyllä"-vaihtoehtoon on helppoa pelkillä nuolinäppäimillä. OSX:ssä en ole kuitenkaan löytänyt mitään nappia, jonka avulla voisin liikkua vaihtoehdosta toiseen vaan ainoa vaihtoehto on käyttää hiirtä ja klikata haluttua vaihtoehtoa. Vai tietääkö joku oikeasti jonkin muun keinon tähän?

iBook on kyllä ykkösvaihtoehto, mutta ehkä olen tällä hetkellä liian tuudittautunut PC:n helppokäyttöisyyteen (mitä se ei todellakaan esim vianmäärityksissä ja vastaavissa ole) ja itseäni varten muokkaamaani korkeaan käytettävyyteen. iBookin myötä edessä olisi taas uusien rutiinien omaksuminen ja taistelu monien hyväksitodettujen ohjelmien saamiseksi uudelle käyttöjärjestelmälle. I just realized what an amount of different applications I'm using in the net. In a way it's easy - as my email is forwarded through Gmail and my bookmarks are in del.icio.us, I'm not tied at all to a certain computer while using the net.

Alongside those two (which seem to be the most important), I've gotten addicted to some other services too. If you are not so familiar with some of these, try them out if you're bored during the xmas holiday. Easy way to kill a lot of time :)

Flickr - I ordered the Pro-account to be able to upload there all the photos which I have and which I shoot. Great service with quite good usability too. Check the interesting photos from the past 7 days.

Blogilista - The list of Finnish blogs. This is what I use to read the really important news of the Finnish Blogland ;)

Movielens - You rate the movies which you've seen and movielens recommends you more by your taste. I've never been disappointed with the top 10 recommendations.

Platinum, Klubitus, NTF - And this is what they call the scene of Finland...;)

Inselkampf - A browser-based online game. Easy, simple, slow - and addictive. A friend of mine just recommended me Travian - I have to check that out soon too.

Then of course writing this blog and hosting two podcasts - DJ Orion's Podcast and brand new Worldwide Mix Selections.

And then they wonder why I don't have so much time for nearly anything. I'm just lying that I'm working for my thesis... ;)

Viime Kajaanin keikalla löysin viereiselle penkille unohtuneesta Ilta-Sanomista pari Sudoku-ristikkoa, jotka aikani kuluksi ratkoin. Englanninohjaajani suositteli niitä jokin aika sitten, mutta en isosti jaksanut innostua. Junassa tyhjän panttina istuessani kuitenkin jäin koukkuun. Täydellinen ajantappaja.

Idea on yksinkertainen. Aseta numerot 1-9 tyhjiin ruutuihin. Jokainen numero saa esiintyä vain kerran jokaisella pysty- ja vaakarivillä ja vain kerran jokaisessa 3x3 ruudun neliössä. Kokeile.

Lost on aivan järjettömän hyvä sarja.

OK, tiedän olevani nyt auttamattomasti myöhässä kaikkien diggareiden silmissä - hehän ovat seuranneet sarjaa jo vaikka kuinka kauan.
En ole mikään TV:n suurkuluttaja - enkä oikeastaan edes tavallinen kuluttaja. Katson televisiota reilusti alle kaksi tuntia viikossa, koska ohjelmatarjonta on vain niin käsittämättömän huonoa. Tosi-TV ei kiinnosta ja suurin osa elokuvistakin on aivotonta B-luokan kamaa. Ei ihme, että Lost ei vielä Suomen kanavilla pyöri. (Sarja näköjään starttaa Nelosella ensi keväänä.)
Mikään pienen joukon fanisarja ei ole kyseessä. Yhdysvalloissa toisen kauden ensimmäinen jakso keräsi vastaanotinten ääreen 23 miljoonaa katsojaa. Suosittelen tutustumaan.

Tama on aivan liian mukavaa. Kannykasta bloggaamisen ainoa huono puoli on, etta teksti menee jenkkisovelluksen lapi ennen paatymista blogiin ja siksi skandit eivat toimi. But now I'm virtually everywhere ;) Maksaakohan taman kaytto muuten ulkomailta hunajaa...?

Kiitoksia kännykkäpähkäilyyni kommentoineille. Päädyin ostamaan 6600:n.
Toistaiseksi olen ollut erittäin tyytyväinen. Parin illan säätelyn jälkeen sähköposti ja muut kommunikaatiosovellukset toimivat näppärästi. Sain puhelimen toimimaan yhteen myös tämän blogin kanssa - voin nyt lähettää tekstiä ja kuvia keikkamatkoilta ja muilta reissuilta suoraan tähän. Ei hassumpaa.
3310 ja 6310i:n jälkeen uusi puhelin vaati pienen hetken totuttelua. Käyttöliittymä on niin selkeästi erilainen vanhoihin verrattuna, että pientä haparointia on esiintynyt ainakin näin alussa. Voin vain kuvitella miltä tuntuu jos tämän jälkeen vaihdan jonkin kilpailevan valmistajan malliin. Tai ehkä totuttelurumba on edessä aina tällaisissa asioissa - vai olenko vain putoamassa teknologian kelkasta?

Mikä on kaikkein paras luku?

Ajattelin vaihtaa hyvin palvelleen Nokian 6310i:n hieman uudempaan malliin.

Uutta valitessa jouduinkin hieman pattitilanteeseen.

En oikeastaan perusta minkään puhelimen kamerasta, koska palveluksessa on jo Fuji E550. Samoin Ipodin rinnalle ei ole tarvetta saada puhelimen sisäistä mp3-toisto-ominaisuutta. Ja kaikkein viimeiseksi haluan maksaa extraa näistä puhelinta valitessani.

Mitä haluan, on mahdollisimman monipuolinen puhelin web-ominaisuuksiltaan. Modeemina puhelimen ei tarvitse toimia, pelkät puhelimen sisäiset selainominaisuudet kelpaavat, jos ne ovat hyvät.

Päädyin tarkastelemaan kolmea mallia - 6600, 6670 ja 6630.

Huolimatta siitä, että 6600 on kaikkein vanhin ja "heikoin" ominaisuuksiltaan, vaikuttaa se tällä hetkellä kaikkein parhaalta minulle. Siinä ei tarvitse maksaa hyvästä kamerasta tai mp3-soittimesta, koska niitä ei ole.
Olen kuitenkin vielä kumman epävarma - onkohan tämä sittenkään hyvä vaihtoehto valita halvinta mallia. Toisaalta - Slusnik Lunan Niko arvioi omassa blogissaan Nokian uutta N90-puhelinta - ja teilaa kalliin tekeleen monilta osin.

Ehkäpä tässäkin tapauksessa vanhempi malli palvelee kaikkein parhaiten kuten 6310i:n kyseessä ollessa tuli huomattua. 6310i lienee edelleenkin paras puhelin, johon olen törmännyt - liian hyvä markkinoille, ei ihme että Nokia veti sen myynnistä :)

Jos jotain vinkkejä tai kokemuksia mainituista malleista löytyy, otan mielelläni vastaan.

Testasin huvikseni selainpohjaista Inselkampf-peliä - ja jäin koukkuun. Mikään maailman nopeatempoisin peli ei ole kyseessä - alkujärjestelyjä tehdessä menee helposti useampi päivä, mutta päivässä ei montaa minuuttia tarvitse kerrallaan pelata.
Ideana on rakentaa saarelleen mahdollisimman tuottoisa määrä erilaisia taloja ja laitoksia, varustaa armeija ja lähettää se lähisaarille, joissa majailee muita pelaajia.
