Our beloved oldskool DJ, the mastermind behind Rose Garden and Kuudes Linja (and various others...), mr. Lil' Tony, has opened a new website called Cosmic City. Cool stuff there, check it out.

Niko recommended Dave's Lounge podcast on his Softys blog. I've subscribed to that as well, but another very good chill-out cast (not independent music, though) is Chill Syndicate. Two hour sets of chill-out - and totally without voice-overs, which is good (as I've mentioned earlier).

New Zealand Herald listed TOP 10 songs played at the funeral. A coffin at the altar and Robbie on the speakers. Some people really know how to go with a style... eeeh...

In the end a small word about my photography project. A bit more than a month ago I started a "Project 365" which is about shooting one photo a day of your life. The main idea is to remember small things which you would have forgotten otherwise after a year. The secondary idea is to prove yourself that no matter how dull and similar basic work days sometimes are, they all have a thing or two worth remembering.
These daily taken photographs are uploaded to the Project 365 Flickr set at least once a week. Take a look.

Lately there has been some sort of a mania of doing oldskool trance mixes. Several DJs have browsed through their oldest records (or bought the backcatalogue as MP3s - who knows these days anymore...) and selected tracks which suit to their image of oldskool. I bet this album wouldn't have gotten this much publicity if it would have been released in a traditional way. No matter if mr. Young wanted it or not, the ways he shares his opinions are not only pointing the absurdity of the war but also the possibilities which our super-modern-and-highly-efficient music industry is lacking.

Orion's new mix Dead End is online and downloadable. When choosing the tracks for Dead End, the idea was to re-create the sound and the feeling which I had playing the opening set in Doris last October. That night I somehow ended up leaving all the records home which represent my usual style and chose only records which I've never played live. The result was astonishing - people went crazy with 120bpm weird techno, electro and acid tracks, which I never thought to be that good. Here's the remake of that night's set, enjoy (if you can) :)

Today basically all the active DJs have a website. Bedroom DJs build their own site to promote themselves and forums like Platinum, NTF or Klubitus offer a possibility to add your DJ-biography and other information there. This hasn't been like this for too long - in 2000, only a few DJs had their own site. At the moment it seems though that you do not even exist as a DJ if you don't have your information online.

Viikonlopun aikana posti täyttyi tutuilta tulevista *ermh* mielenkiintoisia kuvia ja ehdotuksia sisältävistä sähköpostiviesteistä. Näyttäisi, että siellä jossakin jyllää koneessa Nyxem.E-mato, josta koneen käyttäjä ei todennäköisesti tiedä mitään.

Ystävämme F-Secure tarjoaa ilmaiseksi ohjelmaa, jolla madon saa poistettua. Lataa ohjelma tästä ja uusin virustietokanta tästä. Pura molemmat paketit samaan kansioon ja aja ohjelma. Teet sähköpostistani leppoisampaa luettavaa ja omasta koneestasi puhtaamman.

Suoritettuasi ohjelman kannattaa vielä ajaa oma virustorjunta varmuuden varalta kerran läpi.

Työskentelen päivittäin useilla tietokoneilla koulussa, kotona ja ystävien luona. Selkeäksi ongelmaksi useiden työasemien välillä poukkoillessa on muodostunut fakta, että kotikoneelta tutut bookmarkit, RSS-feedit ja muut rutiinit eivät löydy jokaiselta koneelta. Ja kuka nyt muistaisi ulkoa kaikki tärkeimpien sivujen URLit?

Löysin näppärän Web 2.0. -sovelluksen, joka ratkaisi ongelman kertaheitolla. Netvibes antaa mahdollisuuden rakentaa nopeasti ja helposti webbiin oman aloitussivusi, joka tukee RSS-feedien lisäksi Flickriä, hakukoneita (Google, Yahoo), Wikipediaa, Deliciousia, to-do-listoja, säätietoja ja muuta näppärää.

Käytännössä voit nopeasti kasata sivun, josta netin selaaminen on helppo aloittaa - tärkeät linkit ovat heti saatavilla ja RSS-feedit näyttävät uusimmat uutiset, blogipostaukset ja vastaavat.

Nappasin omasta sivustani screenshotin, jossa osa ominaisuuksista näkyy mukavasti ja palkkien liikuttelumahdollisuuskin tulee esille.

Saisivat kuitenkin vaihtaa tuon saitin nimen. Netvibes kuulostaa aika idiootilta.

While writing my thesis (already 50 pages, hooray!:) I've been listening quite an amount of music. I happened to find some really nice free downloads, which definitely are worth recommending. Check:

The other releases on the netlabel Hellven seem to be quite hi-quality, too. So, go and download them :)

The last recommendation comes from Niko Nyman's weblog. He recommended Dark Farmer's ambient album which has been in a heavy rotation (somehow this expression doesn't fit so well to mp3s as vinyls ;) so far. Check Niko's blog entry for more info about the artist.

I just realized what an amount of different applications I'm using in the net. In a way it's easy - as my email is forwarded through Gmail and my bookmarks are in del.icio.us, I'm not tied at all to a certain computer while using the net.

Alongside those two (which seem to be the most important), I've gotten addicted to some other services too. If you are not so familiar with some of these, try them out if you're bored during the xmas holiday. Easy way to kill a lot of time :)

Flickr - I ordered the Pro-account to be able to upload there all the photos which I have and which I shoot. Great service with quite good usability too. Check the interesting photos from the past 7 days.

Blogilista - The list of Finnish blogs. This is what I use to read the really important news of the Finnish Blogland ;)

Movielens - You rate the movies which you've seen and movielens recommends you more by your taste. I've never been disappointed with the top 10 recommendations.

Platinum, Klubitus, NTF - And this is what they call the scene of Finland...;)

Inselkampf - A browser-based online game. Easy, simple, slow - and addictive. A friend of mine just recommended me Travian - I have to check that out soon too.

Then of course writing this blog and hosting two podcasts - DJ Orion's Podcast and brand new Worldwide Mix Selections.

And then they wonder why I don't have so much time for nearly anything. I'm just lying that I'm working for my thesis... ;)

As this blog and the main page is getting more and more visitors from abroad (Spain, Germany, Canada, Netherlands, US, UK, Russia etc...), I started to think it would be a good idea to share some thoughts also in English.

I spent the Sunday afternoon in Flickr making it easier to browse the online flyer collection which I have there. First I uploaded over 50 new flyers and then tagged most of the flyers and sorted them by the city.

It means that now you can easily see some Finnish flyer art and compare the art of clubbing in different cities.
Try it: Flyers from Rovaniemi, Oulu, Haapavesi, Helsinki, Tampere, Turku , Kalajoki and Raahe. Or just see Flyers from Northern Finland or All Flyers. And my favourite: Oldskool flyers.

While searching for the new flyers to add, I found some nice pieces of art. Take a look:

Katharsis-event in Helsinki - really simple and quite unusual style. Only two colours on the front side and three on the back. If I remember right, their club Rauta had more or less the same style. I wish I'd see more of these.


Discomob in Helsinki. I'm always wondering is club Miau! really the only club in Finland brave enough to use humour on their flyers. This one is a good try - makes you at least read the flyer :) I can't say whether all this "application"-stuff takes the focus away from the real content - the event information - but at least it's different.

Aeroloft, Helsinki. This "arrival"/"departure" idea has been used a million times but somehow I like the simplicity of this. Mixing Finnish and English isn't probably the best idea and this air hostess / nurse mixture is quite confusing, but still... OK, this might still need some improvement, but it succeeds to be relaxing. The logo reminds me of the Russian flag, though. Weird, eh?

Kaupunkimaasturit, nuo Amerikan teiden helmet, ovat ilmeisesti rantautumassa Suomeenkin oikein kunnolla. Luulin ihan viattomasti, että kyseessä on lähinnä vain amerikkalainen ilmiö eikä kellään olisi varaa ja kiinnostusta moiseen Suomessa, jossa bensiinin hinnat hipovat kattoa (ja Jenkkeihin verrattuna pilviä).

Olin näköjään väärässä.

Yle aloitti Podcasting-kokeilun varsin vaatimattomalla valikoimalla ohjelmia. Sinällään idea on loistava ja saa toivottavasti lisäpotkua tulevaisuudessa, mutta Podcasting-mahdollisuutta olisi ehkä ensimmäisenä kannattanut tarjota ohjelmista, jotka kiinnostavat ensisijaisesti myös Podcastingin kohderyhmää - eli tietotekniikasta kiinnostuneita nuoria. Kansanradio ja teemaillat eivät tällä hetkellä välttämättä palvele tarkoitusta.

Löysin Fransin blogimerkinnän perusteella mielenkiintoisen leffapalvelun. Kun syötät MovieLensiin vähintään 15 katsomaasi elokuvaa, se alkaa suosittelemaan sinulle uusia leffoja. Mitä enemmän leffoja arvioit, sitä parempia ja makuusi sopivia suosituksia saat. Loistopalvelu.

Parisataa elokuvaa arvioituani omalle katsottavien listalle joutuivat mm. The Incredibles, The Great Escape, Green Mile, Finding Nemo sekä The Shawshank Redemption. Viimeksimainittu vaikuttaa IMDB:n perusteella varsin huonolta, joten taidan aloittaa siitä. Sittenhän näkee, kuinka hyvin palvelu toimii - leffa kun sijoittuu aivan kärkipäähän suosituslistallani. Joitakin japsileffoja ja sotadraamaa listalta löytyy myös, mutta niihin en uskalla koskea ennen tuota Shawshankia.

DJ Indigon vuonna 1998 aloittaman chillout-miksaussarjan kymmenes osa näkee päivänvalon. Eucalyptus ei häviä edeltäjilleen selektionsa puolesta missään vaiheessa. Loistavaa tunnelmointia täyden tunnin verran.

Eri sivu-designien suunnittelijat ovat muokanneet vain css-fileä. Html-pohjaan ei ole koskettu. Huikeaa.

Viime viikoilta omalle del.icio.us -tunnukselle on kertynyt kaikenlaista kivaa.
Kokoelmani hylättyjen rakennusten valokuvaajista kasvoi yhdellä, kun vastaan tuli Deserted Farms. Hylättyjen maatilojen lisäksi sivulta löytyy muitakin taitavia kameraotoksia.
Muidenkin iloksi tässä vielä jo kauemmin arkistoissa Abandoned Places-kategorian alla viihtyneitä saitteja:

Ja viimeisenä Tokion viemärit, jotka eivät nyt aivan mene hylättyjen paikkojen kategoriaan, mutta kuviensa puolesta sopivat tähän mainiosti - hehkutinhan samaa linkkiä jo marraskuussa.
Otan mielelläni lisääkin linkkivinkkejä vastaan, jos mainioita abandoned places-saitteja kävelee surffatessa eteen.

Blue1 aloittaa lennot Rovaniemen ja Helsingin välillä

Lentoyhtiö Blue1 aloittaa tammikuun lopussa suorat lennot Helsingin ja Rovaniemen välillä.

Alkuvaiheessa reittiä lennetään kerran päivässä.

Maanantaista perjantaihin kone lähtee klo 20.20 Helsingistä ja paluukone Rovaniemeltä on perillä Helsingissä alkuyöstä; sunnuntaina lennot ovat iltapäivällä.

Vaikka lappilaiset yrittäjät ja yksityishenkilöt ovat toivoneet myös aamulentoa Rovaniemeltä Helsinkiin, sitä viestintäjohtaja Tom Christides ei vielä lupaa.

Finnairilla ei ole ollut Rovaniemi-Helsinki -välillä kilpailijaa Flying Finn -yhtiön konkurssin jälkeen.

Tämä heijastuu Finnarin lippujen hinnoitteluun; enimmillään meno-paluulippu maksaa yli 500 euroa.

Blue1:n kautta lento Helsinkiin maksaa internetin kautta tilatulla lipulla edullisimmillaan 39 euroa.

Drop-klubin viimeinen ilta oli keskiviikkona ZoomItissa. Rovaniemen ensimmäinen DJ&Live-setti sai aikaan loistavan fiiliksen klubin päätöskerralle - San Mejor deep house -levyjensä ja Sami Kurppa Rhodes-pianonsa kanssa oli erinomaisen toimiva yhdistelmä.

Olen kirjoittanut vajaassa kahdessa vuodessa blogiini kolmesataa kertaa. Määrä on huomattavasti suurempi kuin mitä aloittaessani odotin, mutta samalla myös blogin ulkoasu ja sisältö on muuttunut ja muokkautunut huomattavasti.

Tiesitkö, että Tokion alle on rakennettu käsittämättömän iso tulvientorjuntakompleksi? Drop pyörähti kivasti liikkeelle. Tulevaisuutta ajatellen vierailevat DJt ja ajankohtaiset informaatiot löytyvät NTF:n aiheelle omistetusta topicista eli täältä.
