Beatport Downloader

Beatport has released "Beatport Downloader", a program which "allows you to download and organize your entire purchased music library with one click. No more incomplete or lost music, easily see the status of all your downloads. Organize your music like never before through the Downloader's folder naming preferences. This feature allows for full control of how you store and search your music library."

In a competition between the electronic music mp3 shops, Beatport has realized it's not about the music you sell, it's about how you sell it. Forget the dull newsletters, how reads them anyways. Innovative music marketing such as this Downloader or user-based news and blogging system Beatportal are just good examples how the music industry is about (and has) to change.
I'm happy to see that electronic music industry is one of the trend-setters in the business and isn't afraid to try new ways of marketing.

Vinyl digitalizing: Grado DJ200

The full entry of Vinyl Digitalizing can be found here. Please add the possible comments there.

Vinyl digitalizing is going well. After Audacity crashed a couple of times I've used Ableton Live for recording and normalizing the tracks. Last night I digitalized a nice amount of bootleg breaks from my collection.

The latest questionmark has been the Grado DJ200 cartridges and needles I bought. As I've mentioned, the sound quality of Grado is outstanding, but DJ Orkidea pointed out that the sound volume is somehow quiet. He had noticed that compared to the basic Stanton cartridges the volume of Grado is 2-4db more quiet. I tested the sound with Ortofon Pro and noticed 3db difference.

OK, you have a gain switch on your mixer, but the question remains: how much does the gaining affect the dynamics of the sound and the overall sound quality? Because when you gain the sound coming from the channel you also raise the amount of noise. Right?

On my last gig in Kalajoki I played one digitalized vinyl which sounded fine in the club environment, but I had to gain it quite a lot. I saw a way on Logic Pro to raise the volume level without causing any clipping which would be a perfect for this problem - I just wish there would be a way to make this as a batch.

Major bug on Ableton Live

I don't know if this bug is Apple related, but it sure is a nasty one.

Let's suppose you're recording something on Ableton Live via your line-in. You want to check the sound via your headphones and plug the headphone jack into the line-out of your computer.

What does Ableton Live do?

It cuts a short part off from your recording. It stops recording for a short moment when the jack is plugged in. And again when you pull it off. Basically you'll have gaps on your recording each time you want to double-check its recording quality via headphones. Crazy, isn't it.

Quote of the day: Tiefschwarz
"Music has lost so much of its value since the Internet came along and file sharing in particular. I think the Internet is a good thing in that it’s very democratic so that a DJ in Siberia can have the same chart as someone in Berlin. But that also makes it harder to filter quality, it’s a question of finding the right filters and also how good you are, to stand out from all these millions of tracks out there."

I hate mixes shared via ShareSpace, Megaupload, YouSendIt.com etc, but despite that - this one is really worth mentioning.

Pros and cons of mp3 shops

Listing the pros and cons of mp3 shops

Beatport:
Pros:
+ Very good RSS-feed. Direct links to mp3s, possibility for listening via feed reader, no need to visit the site. However - the feeds are impossible to find.
+ Keyboard shortcuts. However - rewinding and fast forwarding only work if the sample has fully loaded.
+ Very good podcast with one-click-purchase option (works on iTunes).
Cons:
- No possibility to queue the tracks for listening. Needs constant attention. Wastes your time.

Audiojelly:
Cons:
- Charts. Are there any?
- Default currency is pound.
- Who browses music alphabetically by labels, artists or albums? No one? Why to have these features on every page?
- Podcast - good idea. But Gareth Emery's podcast - why?
Pros:
+ You got rid of your awful music player with annoying swwwwooooosh flash animations.

DJDownload:
Cons:
- Player on external page. Nasty, evil feature. Get rid of it!
- Where's your podcast?
Pros:
+ Possibility to queue all the tracks for listening on certain pages.
+ Lowered their prices. Waiting for the call of the other shops...

Did I forget to mention something?

DRM on web streams

Create Digital Music writes: Record Industry wants DRM (Digital Rights Management) on all internet radio to prevent and/or stop stream ripping of songs. Way to go.

I bet Teosto didn't think about this when Yle Areena opened. Hey, Teosto, hot tip! It isn't enough that Yle Areena doesn't work abroad - there might be thousands of people in Finland ripping the on-demand material from your streams. Areena needs DRM. Today!

Underworld's new album "Oblivion with Bells"

Underworld
Oblivion with Bells

Out October 2007

When Underworld released their last album "A Hundred Days off " no one thought it would be nearly 2000 days until the next one arrived. It hasn't been a case of lazing around in the Essex countryside though as the last 5 years have thrown up the 1992-2002 anthology album, two major film scores (Anthony Mingellas’ "Breaking and Entering" and Danny Boyles’ 2007 "Sunshine"), a self-published typographic journal "In The Belly of Saint Paul", a series of pioneering digital-only releases, internet-radio broadcasts, a groundbreaking live web-tv broadcast and gig in partnership with Apple and Frankfurts’ techno giants Cocoon and countless gigs around the world.

Beatport RSS feeds

This feature has nearly doubled the amount of digital music I'm buying. It's very useful, fast - and addictive.
Some guy has found a way to create rss feeds from latest Beatport releases. As I'm using Netvibes, it was easy to drop the feeds I want on my personal Netvibes and boom - now I'll get the latest progressive, breaks, electro and house releases directly to my start page - in real time.
In order to listen to them, I don't need to visit Beatport - Netvibes has a built-in podcast/media player, which works like a charm. If I find something worth buying I just click on the link and end up to the release site of Beatport.

New Order hajosi
Brittiläinen syntikkapop-yhtye New Order -yhtye on hajonnut.

New Order on yksi brittiläisen konemusiikin suurimmista nimistä. Yhtye muodostui Joy Division -yhtyeestä sen jälkeen, kun bändin keulahahmo Ian Curtis teki itsemurhan. Joy Division -yhtyeen taustoja valotetaan esimerkiksi elokuvassa 24 Party People.

New Orderin läpimurtohitti oli vuonna 1983 julkaistu Blue Monday, ja yhtye vahvisti asemansa vuonna 1987 julkaistulla True Faith -hitillään. Molemmat kappaleet ovat muodostuneet konemusiikin klassikoiksi.

Thanks for the tip, Kaasi.

Little by little...

Apple starts to sell DRM free music on iTunes.

“EMI and iTunes are once again teaming up to move the digital music industry forward by giving music fans higher quality audio that is virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings, with no usage restrictions on the music they love from their favorite artists,” said Eric Nicoli, CEO of EMI Group.

[...]

iTunes will also offer customers a simple, one-click option to easily upgrade their entire library of all previously purchased EMI content to the higher quality DRM-free format for 30 cents a song. All EMI music videos will also be available in DRM-free format with no change in price.

Little by little music corporations are starting to find out that the best media publicity comes by serving their customers. That must be such a surprise... ;)

Quote: Jimmy van M

Jimmy van M interview.

"My definition of progressive is music that you don't know why but it always makes you feel good in a certain way. I think that's happening in a lot of music right now. To me, that's all progressive music. It doesn't have to be arpeggiated synths with a droned out bassline."

"I think a good DJ is someone who can play the same records that everyone else has in a way that no one else will. At the end of the day it's about creating that moment with a certain record that characterises you. Only certain people can do it.”

Teosto-skenaario

Let's make more noise.

I've been thinking of this a lot lately. After reading Moby's blog I've noticed that there are just a huge amount of readers, all around the world. If you still add those who read the same posts from his MySpace blog, the actual amount of readers is vast.

Now, Moby has lots of opinions and he's not afraid to tell them. Actually, his provocative way of writing makes people both angry and supportive. The blog entries create different emotions which might even cause actions. And if Moby's writings cause actions, they work.

The more popular electronic music has become, the more I've been thinking why don't clubs, organizations and DJs more openly stand behind certain values such as freedom of speech, environmental issues and anti-war movements? After all, the more popular the club or the DJ is, the more weight their opinions have.

Nowadays saying no to oil industry, being openly interested in climate change or supporting Amnesty, Greenpeace or other similar organizations is simply mediasexy. And I guess less people would dare to ask for a free entry to a club which would give part of their ticket price to support electric cars or prevent climate change - for example.

Ian Ossia visited Finland last weekend. Great gig, great music and I was more than delighted to find a short statement against the oil use from his Myspace-biography. Vast amount of people just simply need role models in order to change their opinions and - as cliché as it is - music can make the world better - why wouldn't the professionals of music make it happen, too?

No matter if you're a professional or simply a music lover, you could take the first step and check the Amnesty's music driven campaign "Make Some Noise" and the barbwire headphone T-shirts, too.

These are small deeds, but in the long run they make the big wheel turn. Let's push it.

Epic coming up

I just finished the last mix for this year. It became the longest - and if not my best mix of this year, it's definitely the most interesting.

I've been thinking of putting together a mix of epic trance for a while now. It's an interesting genre - I accidentally found a good description from Discogs while browsing around:

Epic trance has "musically interesting, constantly changing elements, and building suspense and emotion through means other than twiddling the frequency knob on a filter."

There's so little of this kind of trance released these days. Long tracks with lots of variety, several parts with different musical themes and truly innovative and challenging electronic dance music.

When choosing the tracks, I ended up leaving several nuskool epic tracks aside as well as some too obvious epic classics. And yes - the whole mix could have included only Sunday Club releases and been as epic as it'll ever get, but there wouldn't have been too much point in it.

Now, I'm pretty satisfied with the result. The sound describes very well where my electronic music roots are and also what was the whole idea of trance back in the day: hypnotic yet beautiful and driving.

Next year I'll concentrate more on new music and leave oldskool aside - at least from the mixes. And as the autumn has been pretty trancey, the next mixes will be based more on house. Let that be the first promise for the new year.

Anyway, the new mix, Roots, will be online no later than tomorrow containing music from Sunday Club, Bedrock, Sasha, Gloat, Tenth Chapter, Spooky, Seafield etc.

See you soon.

Sibelius Academy project approved

Sibelius-Academy's Development Centre for Artistic Activity has kindly approved our application and given us a grant for producing an audiovisual music production. The production will combine both traditional and electronic music plus visuals and motion tracking in a way which is - at least - new in Sibelius-Academy.

I will provide here a link or two as soon there's more information available.

Misc and Misc.

First the Misc news and then the Misc. stuff. Boy, I love these smart word games... :P

Misc Management website has a few minor updates, some new mixes, charts etc.

Our beloved oldskool DJ, the mastermind behind Rose Garden and Kuudes Linja (and various others...), mr. Lil' Tony, has opened a new website called Cosmic City. Cool stuff there, check it out.

Niko recommended Dave's Lounge podcast on his Softys blog. I've subscribed to that as well, but another very good chill-out cast (not independent music, though) is Chill Syndicate. Two hour sets of chill-out - and totally without voice-overs, which is good (as I've mentioned earlier).

New Zealand Herald listed TOP 10 songs played at the funeral. A coffin at the altar and Robbie on the speakers. Some people really know how to go with a style... eeeh...

In the end a small word about my photography project. A bit more than a month ago I started a "Project 365" which is about shooting one photo a day of your life. The main idea is to remember small things which you would have forgotten otherwise after a year. The secondary idea is to prove yourself that no matter how dull and similar basic work days sometimes are, they all have a thing or two worth remembering.
These daily taken photographs are uploaded to the Project 365 Flickr set at least once a week. Take a look.

MP3 conclusion

I've been writing several blog posts about the fight between vinyl and mp3 supporters, archiving digital music and the relationship between a DJ and a music format. I've always tried to point out that there really aren't any universal truths in this fight and that there are some facts you just can't deny. And finally I've gotten to a conclusion:

I've been already thinking for some time what would be my response on the change of the DJ-culture. Follow the flow, sell my vinyl collection, start playing only digital music and make the best out of it? Or make a lonely fight-back, keep supporting vinyl and keep the amount of CDRs in minimum and play only promotional tracks in digi format?

The only what is certain, is that some changes have to be made. I'm happy that I've come to a conclusion which satisfies me both as a vinyl freak and as a music lover: With a "small" amount of work I've listed all the old records I still need in order to call my vinyl collection perfect and complete. In addition to that, I won't leave the collection to the state "2006" but I'll update it constantly with important releases and so-called future old-skool classics. I'll also support certain labels by buying all their new releases in plastic to have a complete catalogue and collection of their music.

OK, that's it about vinyl. What about mp3's then? The amount of music mentioned above would easily fulfill the needs of my upcoming DJ-sets. But buying the music only for keeping the dancefloor pleased doesn't lead anywhere (Miika wrote well about that already earlier). There are SO many better-than-average but far-from-classic tracks in online shops and it would be a pity to leave them there just because they are released only in digital format. And there are even more tracks which aren't meant for dance floor but which you just happen to love. For the sake of keeping your sense of true music alive, it's even necessary to buy tracks which you probably wouldn't end up playing live. I don't mean bad tracks, but tracks which are just interesting, but definitely not danceable. Would there be any better format for that than digital?

Hopefully this sums this up - for now.. :)

Is there a record company that is not evil?

Aula and Creative Commons Finland invite you to the next Aula Talk:

IS THERE A RECORD COMPANY THAT IS NOT EVIL?
By: John Buckman, CEO and Founder, Magnatune (www.magnatune.com)
Monday October 23rd at 19:00 - 20:30
Kulttuuritehdas Korjaamo
Töölönkatu 51B, Helsinki (www.korjaamo.fi)

John Buckman isn't afraid to point out what's wrong with the music industry. Hit-driven radio is boring.CDs cost too much, and artists only get 20 cents to a dollar for each CD sold.Online sales (such as on Amazon.com) often cost the artist 50% of their already-pathetic royalty. Record labels lock their artists into legal agreements that hold them for a decade or more.Napster, Gnutella and Kazaa proved that people love music, and they want to share it - butthe entrenched record industry wants to kill P2P and internet radio.

"Magnatune is my project. The goal is to find a way to run a record label in the Internet Reality: file trading, Internet Radio, musicians' rights, the whole nine-yards", Buckman explains. Unlike regular record companies thatshare a percentage of their profit with artists, Magnatune shares a full 50% of the licensing, cdsales, and merchandise revenue (not profit) with the artists.

"I thought: why not make a record label that has a clue? That helps artists get exposure, make at least as much money they would make with traditional labels, and help them get fans and concerts." Come and hear Buckman describe his vision of a record company that is not evil and discuss the earning model for Magnatune's opencontent distribution.

Zero7 & YouTube & Copyrights

This just tells so well how different points of view artists and major labels can have towards copyright.

Zero7 just told on their MySpace page that they've registered to YouTube and have some of their music videos online. They are asking people to post their recordings from Zero7's gigs, some covers and maybe cover music videos, too:

"For those of you who might not know, Zero 7 have their own YouTube page.
You can watch the band's videos on there and if you upload your own Zero 7 videos onto YouTube, then it could appear on the page.
They could be videos you've recorded at gigs, or even your own cover versions!"

I wonder what Universal, Sony BMG and other major labels would say about that. At the moment Universal is telling that YouTube owns them millions of dollars due to these kinds of copyright infringements.
I think any artist would consider a possibility to see their music videos on the Internet for free as a very good and very cheap promotion and not as a baad, bääd copyright infringement.

This goes back to Finnish copyright laws, too. As I've earlier told, it's basically illegal to rip your own vinyls to CDRs and play them on gigs. I wonder how many electronic music artists would really deny a possibility to rip their old records which aren't available as MP3s and bring them to life again.

It might be it's because I'm not a recording artist, but I really do not see any good in the way big copyright companies are working - from the marginal music style's point of view, at least.
Killing a possibility to define your own ways of promotion does not do any good for the record and copyright companies - it just harms the artist. And I want to believe they are going to find it out when it's too late. That would do good for them.

Levy-yhtiöt hävisivät vertaisverkko-oikeudenkäynnin Tuusulassa

Tuusulan käräjäoikeus hylkäsi eteläsuomalaista nuorta miestä vastaan nostetun syytteen mp3-tiedostojen jakamisesta ns. Finreactor-tapauksessa. Mies vapautettiin kymmenien tuhansien eurojen korvausvaatimuksista levy-yhtiöille. Syyttäjän esittämä näyttö ei riittänyt eli syyte kaatui todisteiden puutteeseen. Asiasta ei ollut suurta epäselvyyttä, sillä tuomio luettiin heti käsittelyn päätyttyä.

General Fuzz & Unity video

If you're into any kind of chill-out/ambient music, I highly recommend you to check out the latest album of General Fuzz, called Messy's Pace.
The album is completely free. >> General Fuzz's website.

For a flyer freak like me, it was fun to get a copy of Club Unity's latest flyer. The flyer itself is a DVD disk which contains a video of Unity's past - 10 years of parties.

If you can't get a copy of the DVD itself, there's always a possibility to download the video in Quicktime format >> Club Unity 10 Year Anniversary Video.

Oh, it seems to be in YouTube as well. (Thanks, Niko)

Pretty productive weekend

A remix of Tilt's "I Dream" got nearly finished last weekend. Here's a short clip of what's coming up next:

Tilt - I Dream (DJ Orion remix)

Snare Rush Collage.
Weird collage of clips and videos from the past...
You got to love this YouTube-quality... :P Here's a link to a better quality mp4-file => download (38mb).

And finally a peek to the iTunes Music Folder.
Quite a nice way to present one's musical taste in a visual way.

The first news from Helsinki

The week has passed incredibly fast. It's been all about moving, doing the infamous vinyylijumppa to the second floor without any elevator and piecing together new furniture.

I guess carrying the music collection around was some sort of a last temptation to forget the vinyl, convert everything to CD-format and save your back from breaking before your 30th anniversary. I'm sure there was someone whispering to my ear "How much would that weight in mp3-format...?" when I climbed up the stairs with the 40kg vinyl cases.

Now after four full moving days quite much everything is done and we'll be heading to Germany for nine days on Monday. I managed to finish most of the stuff on my todo-list despite the hurry:

First of all, after building up the new DJ-setup (which must be the best I've ever had what comes to sound and comfort) I recorded Spinni's 10 Year Anniversary Mix. Spinni celebrates their ten year old way through the Tampere club history (more info here) and this "official" mix more or less describes the sound of the event's second day. Techy progressive, breaks and trance in spirit of the oldskool, with a couple of fresh exceptions. Those who are subscribed to the podcast should get the mix any time soon, but you'll find the link on the forums and Spinni's website a bit later, too.

I visited Danceteria, DTM last night. Good way to get the first touch to Helsinki clubland - the place was crowded and atmosphere high. I shot restlessly a couple of photos while meeting new people and I have to say I felt pretty welcome - there were really nice people around.

Wait

The future looks bright. In October I'll be heading to Northern Ireland for a week and before that I'll hope to have some announcements to be made about some club and music related things. Oh, and nearly forgot - New York City based fitness radio station Exercise Radio starts to air some mixes of mine on their exercise related shows. It seems that vinyylijumppa isn't the only way to get fit with vinyls ;)

And as a postscript: It's never too late to start to love music. Or too early...
Heavy music has young fans...
